3 Easy Ways to Moist & Fresh Eyes
Do you have itchy and sandy eyes? If you are an active computer user, dry and dusty air in your office might surprisingly not be the culprit. After long working hours focusing at digital screens, the cause for dry eyes is most likely the lack of blinking.
On average, individuals blink anywhere from 600 to 900 times per hour; however, with current technology leading to more time staring at digital screens, our blinking is reduced to between 180 and 240 times per hour. This is about 70% less than normal! After working six hours in front of a screen, you are essentially 2500 blinks behind.
Blinking is essential
When the eyelid swipes over the eye, it cleans and spreads nutrients and lubricants that contain essential antibodies and antibacterial enzymes. A proper blink protects your eye from infections and gives you a sharper image.
Why don’t we blink more?
The cause has roots in a natural reflex developed when humans solely depended on their eyesight to find food. While hunting, it was necessary to keep the eyes wide open. A blink could mean a lost supper.
Today blinking responds to modern challenges. In a technology-focused and fast-pace lifestyle, the consistent news-feeds and information on screens steal our attention, which often causes us to forget to blink. As a result, our eyes get dry and are at a great risk.
Here are some simple steps to avoid dry eyes:
1. Blink Enough
Blink at least six times each minute. This may sound easy, yet is hard to put into practice. To remind yourself to blink, create a natural trigger. For example, blink whenever you do a ‘search’, or after you click ‘send’ on the screen. Find a trigger or two that works best for you.
2. Blink Fully
Without noticing, we often blink partially. A full blink means that you close your eyelids completely, yet without squeezing. The best is to let the upper lids gently touch the lower lids. This allows the eyelids to collect and spread tears, resulting in moist eyes. Blink slowly and fully to notice the increase in moisture.
3. Drink
Another essential, yet often forgotten, simple practice is to drink water. Do not wait until you feel thirsty. Plain water is the best choice to keep yourself hydrated and, at the same time, your tear glands are able to produce enough tears to make your eyes feel comfortable.
