Sleep as Self-Care
Healthier Eyes & Better Sleep
Do you spend much time with your mobile phone and work with digital screens?
Sure, it's great how mobile technology allows us to work, connect with others, and browse the internet, at any time and at any location.
But the more time you spend staring at digital screens, the more you challenge your eyes. As hours go by, your eyes may start to feel tired, dry, and itchy. And you may experience tightness, pain, and tension around the eyes, followed by headaches, trouble in refocusing your eyes, and dizziness.
Also, your risk of developing glaucoma is much higher. Without treatment, glaucoma can eventually lead to blindness.
To keep your eyes healthy, getting enough quality sleep is critical! It is only while you sleep that the eye muscles can properly relax and recover, and the eyeballs get metabolically cleansed.
Also, when your eyes are more relaxed and stress-free, your nervous system has less negative stress to manage, and as a result, your overall sleep quality can improve
3 tips for Healthier Eyes and Better Sleep
1. When you are using digital devices, keep a short rest after every 20 minutes of staring at the screen
The best would be if you can:
- Close your eyes
- Take a few deep breaths
- Let your body relax
- Then get up
- Walk around a little bit
This all helps to promote body circulation. In fact, it is your entire body that needs a break, not just your eyes.
2. When possible, limit yourself from using electronic devices
Instead, spend more time for self-care, be physically active, do creative activities offline, or take time to relax.
3. At least 30 minutes before sleep, turn off all screens
This includes all types of screens, including phones, tablets, TV, eReaders and computers.
Optimal Sleep Length
The health authorities advise for adults to get an average of 8 hours of good quality sleep. Already if you sleep 6-7 hours per night, your risks of experiencing issues with your eyes are significantly higher. Therefore, simply by adding one hour to your sleep can make a critical difference.
Optimal Sleep Quality
From the point of view of the eyes, optimal sleep quality means that your eyes are already relaxed when you fall asleep. This makes it easier to fall asleep and your brain can move smoothly through different sleep types and cycles.
