Insomnia
Cause & Cure

Borrowed from Latin language, Insomnia is about not being able to fall asleep and sleep well.

One has Insomnia, when getting into sleep takes long, even hours, with a tendency to wake up often in the middle of night, not able to fall back into sleep. The next day, one feels tired, but the next evening, once again, cannot fall asleep.

The Root Cause of Insomnia

The list of factors that causes Insomnia is extensive. In fact, Insomnia can be caused by any aspect of life: nutrition, physical activity -or inactivity, mind and emotion-related issues, challenges caused by climate and culture etc.

Common to all these factors is that they constantly agitate your neurological system, creating waves of neurological stress. While it is true that some stress could be positive, even necessary, but when the amount of stress exceeds a certain level, it becomes negative. As a result, neurological functions, like sleep, get affected and out of order. In other words — anything that can cause neurological stress can trouble your sleep and cause Insomnia.

The Cure of Insomnia

To cure Insomnia, there are two options. The first one is to recognize the origins that cause stress and resolve them. The second option is to do something to calm down the nervous system.

Discovery

To recognize the origin that causes your Insomnia could sometimes be very obvious. For example if it is the cup of coffee you enjoy late at night that keeps you awake, simply avoid doing this. However, even this type of life-style changes might not improve your sleep right away. The process of curing Insomnia can be slow, and I know how it feels.

Personally, I had a much more difficult situation, years ago, when I couldn’t sleep because of chronic back pain. Eventually I was able to cure my back through neuro-learning and studying how the mind-body organization works.

Then, I unexpectedly discovered how the same gentle movements that helped me in improving physically could make me feel as if falling asleep. I also noticed how the quality of my sleep kept improving. Inspired by my discovery I developed the Moving into Sleep Method.

What I found out is how gentle movements can calm down the nervous system. Practical and easy-to-learn, my method can help in curing insomnia in a 100% natural way. Backed by educational neuroscience, using gentle movement to heal the brain is on of the most effective methods as movement is the language of the brain.

The Best Sleep

To cure Insomnia and get your sleep back, the best is to apply both ways  — by resolving the original causes and by learning how to calm down your nervous system. With this combination you can get results and sleep better right away.

"Better sleep is a gentle movement away"

Too high or low support will twist your neck muscles, which can affect your whole body.

If you prefer to lie on your back, make the support thinner than when you lie on your side.
Fold the towel so that your neck feels well supported and you can roll your head easily from side to side.
Note that the alignment of your neck often reflects first the way it is when you stand or sit.
Therefore, after some time, it might be necessary to adjust the hight

If you lie on your side, create a support so that your neck is in line with your spine.
Experiment with different heights, until you feel your neck is as relaxed as possible and free to move.
If necessary combine a folded towel with a flat pillow
Be aware that some pillows get compressed during the night and won't give you consistent support.
A folded towel, on the other hand, maintains its shape very well.
Once you have created the right support for your head, move it a little backward, so that nothing or as little as possible touches your cheek.
A gentle touch on the cheek triggers a rooting reflex, which activates the neck muscles to turn your head.
Ideally, the core support is under the side of the skull, behind the ear, where you can find the center of balance of your head.
Note also that your neck doesn't need any support. Therefore, avoid squeezing a soft pillow under your neck as it will bother you by limiting body circulation and free movement.

The support you get is firm, yet comfortable and the flat surface promotes comfort and ease in movement.
Some weeks ago, my mother-in-law told she had a stiff neck every morning. When I asked her how she supported her head, she told having a basic, soft, and quite a thick pillow. I then told her how I support my head with a folded bath-towel, sometimes combined with a thin pillow. This allows me to adjust the support so that my head is well balanced and free to move. It is a great solution, functional and cheap.
